Important Note: It is strongly recommended that you attempt a conventional uninstall of Act! before performing the manual uninstall. Please refer to the following Knowledgebase articles:

If a conventional uninstall fails, then next try using the ACT! Uninstaller utility. Please refer to the following Knowledgebase article:

If both of the above methods fail, then proceed to the steps below for a manual removal of Act! v16: 

Important Note: If you have attempted to uninstall Act! using the conventional method or the ACT! Uninstaller tool, or if you are having issues due to a partial install, you may not find all of the files, folders or registry keys described through this Answer. If you find this to be the case, simply move on to the next step in the solution.

Note: Some processes may resist deletion. Do not be overly concerned if this occurs; simply end as many unnecessary processes as possible.

Preparation Tasks:
The following are tasks needed to occur before you can manually uninstall Act!:

Creating Back Ups:
If you intend to continue using Act!, please ensure that you have a current backup of all Act! contact databases as well as your ACT! E-mail database. For detailed information on backing up your Act! database and E-mail, please refer to the following Knowledgebase Answers:

Warning:
 If you are using Internet Mail, Outlook® Express, Eudora® or Local ACT! Folders for E-mail, it is imperative that you create a e-mail back up. You will permanently lose ALL e-mails if you do not create a back up.

Stopping the SQL Server (ACT7) Service:
You must stop the ACT7 service before you can manually uninstall:

  1. Click the Windows Start button, and then click Run. The Run dialog box appears.
  2. Type net stop „sql server (act7)“ (including quotes) into the Open field, and then click OK. The following DOS window appears briefly.

  3. When the DOS window clears your ACT7 service is stopped.


Ending Running Processes:

  1. Right-click an empty space on the Windows Taskbar, and then click Task Manager from the shortcut menu. The Windows Task Manager launches.
  2. Select Processes tab; click column header Image Name to sort by name.
  3. Left click on the following services individually and click End Process to stop them: 
    • Act.Outlook.Service.exe
    • Act.Outlook.Sync.exe
    • Act.Scheduler.UI.exe
    • Act.Server.Host.exe
  4. Close the Windows Task Manager.

Configuring Windows Explorer:
Ensure that Windows Explorer is configured to allow you to view hidden files. Follow these steps from Windows Explorer:
  1. Launch Windows Explorer 
    Note: My computer icon on XP, or Computer icon on Vista and Windows 7.

  2. Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options. The Folder Options dialog box appears.
  3. Under the View tab, in the Hidden files and folders section, ensure that the Show hidden files and folders option is enabled.
    Note: For Vista and Windows 7, the View option is located under Organize then select Folder and Search options.

  4. Click Apply (if necessary) and then click OK.
  5. Close Windows Explorer.

Manually Removing Act!:

Note:
 If, prior to performing a manual uninstall, you attempted the uninstall from the Start menu or from Add or Remove Programs in the Windows Control Panel, you may not find all of the files, folders and/or registry keys described below.

Removing Act! Files and Folders:
This procedure involves renaming or removing Act! and the Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 instance files and/or folders, and removing specific registry keys. Before removing the necessary items.
Follow the steps below:

    1. Launch Windows Explorer (or My Computer).
    2. Navigate to the Act! Preferences folder in the following location and rename the folder by adding OLD to the end of the folder name:

      • Windows XP and Windows Server® 2003:
        C:\Documents and Settings\[Users folder]\Application Data\ACT\ACT Data\
      • Windows Vista®/Windows 7/Windows Server 2008/Windows 8:
        C:\Users\[current user]\AppData\Roaming\ACT\ACT Data\

      Note: If you are unable to see the Application Data file folder, you need to ensure that you are viewing hidden files and folders. Click the Tools menu, and then click the Folder Options option (Organize > Folder and search options if using Windows Vista/7/Server 2008).

      The Folder Options dialog box appears.



      Under the View tab ensure that the Show hidden files and folders option is enabled and the check box for Hide extensions for known file types is clear.

    1. Navigate to the ACT! program folder in the following default location:

      C:\Program Files\ACT\ACT for Windows

      Rename this folder to C:\Program Files\ACT\ACT for Windows old.

      Note: If this is a 64-bit computer, the correct path is C:\Program Files (x86)\ACT\ACT for Windows

    2. Navigate to the following folder:

      C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\

      Note: If this is a 64-bit computer, the correct path is C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\

      Delete the MSSQL10_50.ACT7 folder.

  1. Navigate to the following locations and delete any folders with an Act! Product ID/GUID (Globally Unique Identifier):

    C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information
    64-bit operating system: C:\Program Files (x86)\InstallShield Installation Information

    Act! v16 GUID Numbers:
    Pro – {D8681789-B1E0-4417-982B-29E1CD7EA830}
    Premium – {87371EE4-490F-4ED2-A374-0F18E8E6864F}
  2. Navigate to and delete the following files:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\Act7AB32.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\Act7Ext.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\Act9AB32.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\Act9Ext.dll

    Note: If this is a 64-bit computer, the correct path is:

    C:\WINDOWS\SysWOW64\Act7AB32.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\SysWOW64\Act7Ext.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\SysWOW64\Act9AB32.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\SysWOW64\Act9Ext.dll


  3. Close Windows Explorer (or My Computer).


Removing Act! Registry Keys:

Now that you have removed or renamed Act! and SQL Server instance related items from your hard drive, you must remove all Act! references from the Windows Registry. Follow the steps below:

    1. Click the Windows Start button, and then click Run. The Run dialog box appears.
    2. Type regedit into the Open field, and then click OK. The Windows Registry Editor launches.

      Caution: We strongly recommend that you back up the system registry before making any changes. Incorrect changes to the registry could result in permanent data loss or corrupted files. Please make sure you modify only the keys specified. For detailed information on backing up the Windows Registry, click the link below:

    1. Once your registry is backed up, navigate to and delete the following folders:

      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ACT!
      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail\ACT!7 Mail

      : If this is a 64-bit computer, the correct path is:

      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWAR\Wow6432Node\ACT!
      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Clients\Mail\ACT!7 Mail

    1. Navigate to the following folder:

      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server

      64-bit operating system: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWAR\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server



      Right-click the Installed Instance value from the Name column with ACT7 for Data, and then click Modify. The Edit Multi-String dialog box appears.



      Clear all Value data, and then click OK. This will remove ACT7 from the Data column.


    1. Navigate to the following folder:
      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\Instance Names\SQL

      64-bit computer: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWAR\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\Instance Names \SQL



      Delete the ACT7 value from the Name column with the MSSQL.10_50.ACT7 in the Data column. (Right-click, click Delete from the shortcut menu, and then click Yes on the Confirm Value Delete dialog box.)

    1. Navigate to the following location:
      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server
      For 64-bit computer: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server

      Delete the ACT7 and MSSQL10_50.ACT7 keys.


    2. Navigate to and delete the following folders:

      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\ActDiag.exe
      64-bit path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\ CurrentVersion\App Paths \ActDiag.exe

    1. Navigate to the following locations and delete any folders that match the Product ID Numbers:

      Act! v16 GUID Numbers:

      Pro – {D8681789-B1E0-4417-982B-29E1CD7EA830}
      Premium – {87371EE4-490F-4ED2-A374-0F18E8E6864F}

      • If Act! was installed with the Anyone who uses this computer option for Specify who can use ACT! on this computer (default):

Removing Program Icons and Shortcuts:

If you plan to reinstall Act! skip to the next step or use the following steps to remove program icons and shortcuts to launch Act!:

  1. Right-click the Act! Icon on your Desktop, click Delete from the shortcut menu, and then confirm the deletion by clicking the Delete Shortcut button.
  2. Right-click the Act! Icon on your Taskbar, click Delete from the shortcut menu, and then confirm the deletion by clicking the Delete Shortcut button.
  3. Click the Windows Start button, point to All Programs (or Programs), right-click the Act! (Standard version installation) or Act! Premium option, and then click Delete from the shortcut menu. The following Warning message box appears.

  4. Click Yes to confirm the deletion.

Post Uninstall Tasks:
The following are required tasks of the uninstall that not part of the Act! installation.

Removing Temp Files:
You must delete all files in the two Windows Temp folders. Use the following steps:
  1. Click the Windows Start button, and then click Run. The Run dialog box appears.
  2. Type %temp% in the Open field, and then click OK. The Temp folder window appears.
  3. Click the Edit menu, and then click Select All.
  4. Click the File menu, click Delete, and then confirm the deletion.
  5. Close the Temp window.
  6. Launch Windows Explorer (or My Computer).
  7. Browse to C:\Windows\Temp.
  8. Click the Edit menu, and then click Select All.
  9. Click the File menu, click Delete, and then confirm the deletion.
  10. Close Windows Explorer (or My Computer).
  11. Reboot your computer.
